For many other career choices, you roughly know how long it takes to start making some money. Maybe you need to go to University for 5 years, then start working as a slave in order to have your first experiences on your CV and then you can finally apply for a serious job and start getting a decent salary.
When it comes to being a trader, you may wonder: “how long does it take to become a profitable trader?”.
In this article, I will share my own story, my own path. No lambos, no villa with swimming pool, no money rain.
I started my Forex Trading career in 2007.
It took me so long that when I see these Youtubers claiming to have learnt trading last year and be rich now, I wonder whether I’m stupid or they are lying.
Of course, it also depends on other variables. The starting capital, time and money available to invest in your education, opportunities around you, your motivation, your personal life and much more. Let me tell you a bit more about my path.
I started in 2007. I was 17 and I couldn’t even open an account for myself, so I used my mother’s name to open my first account!
I don’t come from a rich family. I had €500, that I saved during the high school period, and I decided to go all in with Forex trading.
Money availability was definitely scarce. Not only did I start with a small Forex Trading account, but I couldn’t even afford proper Forex education.
If money was an issue, time was even a worse subject. It was my last year at high school and it was my last year as a professional chess player. I remember bringing my first book about trading with me at high school, trying to read every now and then.
I would also say that opportunities around me were not thriving. It was 2007, not many books about trading, Forex trading was just starting to become very popular and we did not have a lot of quality content on the internet. There was no Federico Sellitti, coming with a great trading course that could set you on the right path and speed up your learning process!
I’m just too good at marketing! I’ve been able to advertise my courses in this post, without anyone noticing!
Where were we? Oh yes, my story.
Looking back at that period, I think that everything was set for failure. I blew up my account in 2 months.
Although feeling devastated, I didn’t give up. I decided to quit my chess career, I joined University, studying Statistics for the Financial markets, I started to spend a significant amount of time reading about trading, posting on Forums, attending live classes and webinars, testing different strategies. You may think that it became an obsession (and maybe you are right).
I think it was a strong passion combined with the desire to succeed.
As you can see from the time table above, at the end, I’ve done it. I’ve been able to quit my job and live my dream as a trader.
It’s been a long journey and here I am, still learning a lot, still dedicating most of my time to trading, with the same passion and the same desire to succeed.
